The Story Behind the Story

I was that girl who grew up wanting a horse. Although I never got my longed-for horse, the next best thing is writing about them. I first heard about Topaz the mule through Colby’s Crew Rescue (CCR), an equine rescue that saves the lives of horses, mules, and donkeys that have been dumped by owners who no longer want them. The CCR girls go to the pens to rescue these animals—buying them, rehabilitating them, and hopefully adopting them into loving, forever homes. When I saw the picture of Topaz on their Facebook page and read her story, I knew I had to write about her. This book is short and sweet, but full of heart and a good way to help children understand that we should love and care for all animals, no matter how old they are.
